Norby, a management trainee, shares what it’s like working at Enterprise and how his military experience helped to prepare him for this role.
I was in the Navy and needed to decide on either commissioning as an officer or taking a risk and venturing out into the civilian world to utilize my skills in a different field. I received a call from Enterprise, interviewed and never looked back. Since joining the organization, I’ve been challenged and able to consistently learn, with plenty of opportunities to grow my career within the company.
I served four years in the Navy, starting right after high school in 2014 when I began basic training in Great Lakes, Illinois. After graduating from the intense 16-week training, my initial duty station was in San Diego, California. I then transferred to USS AMERICA LHA, an amphibious warship the length of three football fields that carried over 3,000 personnel. I was privileged to meet people all over the world, including a collaboration with the Royal Navy.
My position or “rate” in the Navy was a culinary specialist – so yes, I am an amazing cook! Eventually, I transitioned to military police, was promoted, and in 2018 when I left the Navy I was a second-class petty officer.
My last job in the Navy was primarily working as an emergency center operator. In this role, I learned to manage over 300 cases across 14 ships on emergency protocols for the western border of the United States, ranging from California to Hawaii. In the case of a natural disaster or life-threatening situation, I was part of the team that would notify these states to evacuate personnel and utilize notification for the initial defense protocol.
My experience in the military prepped me for this role and made me adept to handle any situation. Every customer has different needs, and as a management trainee, I am learning to meet those needs while running a business and strengthening the company’s brands.
During my military career, I learned that honor, courage, and commitment are the foundations of any sailor’s success. At Enterprise it is no different, we work hard, communicate effectively, and rally behind each for the success of the company and our relationships with our customers. Building a career in this company is achievable, and it is an honor to work with the leadership and serve my community. In addition, the adaptability, resilience, and work ethic I gained in the military transitioned well into this company.
The team environment is phenomenal! The leadership, guidance, and support provided to run the business are more than any employee can ask for. We check in on each other to promote goals, and communicate to ensure clear expectations.
The best part of my job is learning the business from the ground up and striving to do more and progress. The management program provides real-life training and classes that many companies do not offer. The skills developed within this company help mold trainees into professionals!
