I think there is one thing we can all agree on: 2020 is officially over and for that we are thankful! Each New Year, many of us create resolutions and set our sights on new goals, a new focus or a new adventure—but this New Year is a bit different.
Turning the page on your calendar didn’t erase many of the difficulties 2020 presented. Even in 2021, “The Power of Believing” will help ensure you’re equipped for what might continue to be a challenging time for many. Here are some simple tips to lean into your believing superpower!
What did you learn about yourself in 2020? Take those lessons into 2021 and continue to grow. One example most of us can relate to: Your 2020 likely included a complete shift from in-person gatherings to the utilization of online platforms that support virtual personal connection. You learned that you could adapt and use technology to enrich relationships, both personally and professionally. Continue to use technology to build relationships at work and outside of work hours. Bonus tip for spreading positivity and boosting your own mood: help technology-challenged family members or friends stay connected, too.
The foundation for a positive mind transformation is possessing a strong desire to want good things to happen – rather than just hoping they will. Positive pep talks before a critical meeting, upcoming interview or difficult conversation will plant seeds for the outcomes you desire.
Research shows that emotions – all emotions – are contagious! When we surround ourselves with negative influences, it becomes more difficult to feel hopeful and positive. When you tell yourself you “can’t” or use negative words to reinforce an emotion, you’re much more likely to feel defeated.
How you mentally start your day truly will define what it looks like. Try turning off the news and go for a walk. Take a virtual “art tour” of your favorite museum, or listen to a “positive thinking” podcast first thing in the morning.
Understanding your personal needs as well as areas in which you want to grow, is another step towards believing that 2021 can and will be different. Start by asking yourself what you really want from 2021 and how you plan to achieve your vision. Remember, most positive transformations don’t happen overnight. Many of us start the year with lofty goals but we tend to fail just a few months into the New Year. Invest in yourself but know that you must design a personal program that is easy for you to follow.
Writing down your daily thoughts is an great way to track your personal and professional goals. The reason for fluctuations in mood or productivity throughout the day may become clear if you simply write down how you felt and what might have been behind it. Many of us learn we need more sleep or realize we consume too much caffeine when we listen to our bodies.
You are ready and equipped to handle 2021 and the road ahead! Self-Assess, Self-Talk and Self-Awareness are just the beginning. Your Power of Believing train will continue to pick up steam but remember: this is a personal journey. You can control how you respond to setbacks: that’s your superpower!
